Many are the stories that were told in the Hebrew Bible, but the one story that is yet to be told is the story of the Hebrew Bible itself.
The relationship with gods/god has always been one of man’s oldest preoccupations, and still is till this very day. While it’s fair to assume that Modern day man owes his advancement in philosophy and science to ancient Greece and its earliest thinkers, it’s equally fair when it comes to the development of religion and the evolution of religious thinking to give credence to the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia.
In fact, the earliest vestiges of human faith in God, as we know it today, are to be traced back to the valley of the River Nile and the one between the rivers Euphrates and Tigris. We’re surely to find the root of our belief in a supreme creator inscribed, in hieroglyphs and cuneiform, on the pyramids and papyri of ancient Egypt and on the clay tablets of Sumer … And not within the confines of the Hebrew Bible, as many still believe.
If we still cherish the Greek school of wisdom and science and continue to build on the teachings of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Pythagoras, I wonder why we stopped honoring the ancient gods of Egypt and Sumer and Babylon. What has become of the mighty gods of the ancient Near East? What happened to Anu and Enlil, what has become of the beautiful Goddess “Inanna” Ishtar … The one god, Aten, and what happened to the omnipotent Amun/Amen of Thebes? … Amen, whose name is still echoing in every house of prayers on earth?
How come we fail to recall any of the magnificent epics of Sumer (watch video of the epic of Gilgamesh) or the amazing mythology of Egypt (watch video of the Egyptian creation myth) whereas our kids know the stories of the Hebrew Bible by heart? But then again, if our kids are to be introduced to the myths of ancient Egypt and the epics of Sumer (watch video of the Sumerian creation myth) they won’t feel like they are in a strange land. The stories of Sumer and Egypt will sound so familiar.

… This has long been common knowledge amongst the scholars of history, archeology and anthropology, but I find it extremely necessary today, in the so called information age, to drag it out of the academic realm and expose it in the open before the public eyes.
Why do we remember and celebrate legendary figures like David and Solomon who had no (actual) bearing on the human course of history, while we hardly recognize the enormous impact historical figures like Akhenaten or Hammurabi had on how we today come to define monotheism and the rule of law. But then, what do we, men of modern times, know or even care? … We were only told that in the beginning was the word. But according to history … it wasn’t. In the beginning, was the river – the Nile in Egypt and Tigris and Euphrates in Mesopotamia.
The river and its fertile delta granted the Egyptians and the Sumerians not only the stability and prosperity but also the time to contemplate life and beyond. This is how ancient mythology and spirituality kicked off and evolved.
Unlike the desert culture of violent conflict and raids, cultivating the land required communal work that had to follow social norms and values based on collaboration. This was the dawn of social conscience. Man’s first moral code of conduct was not handed down to him on some clay tablet; rather it was an outcome of his early social experiences that were based on cooperation and not on aggression.
The Egyptian/Mesopotamian communities of farmers were highly influenced by the dynamics of the river. The ebb and flow of their rivers made the Egyptian and Mesopotamian farmers think of life as a (repeated) cycle of birth, decay and rebirth again. This was man’s first vestiges of religious thinking.
But does that mean that non-agricultural communities were not religious? To answer that question, we first have to differentiate between religion and rituals. Most primitive communities, e.g., nomadic tribes like the Hebrews, had their local deities, as gods of war and fertility.
On the other hand, a religion in ancient Egypt was not a religion of comfort or beneficence. It was an all-embracing doctrine, like a harmony that was observed by all the players in a big philharmonic orchestra. It was a way of life. These Egyptian and Mesopotamian religions were Mythopoeic. Whereas our world view may be scientific or rational, so we tend to believe, these river civilizations adopted a world view based on myth.
The biggest copyright infringement in history
The stark resemblance between Biblical and Sumerian creation stories poses some serious questions
Now we know that religion, with colossal temples and ziggurats and creation myths, first sprouted along the fertile banks of the Tigris and Euphrates in Mesopotamia and the river Nile in Egypt. Then how could we explain the dominance of Judaism, some tribal cult which supposedly originated (centuries later in time) amid the arid terrains of ancient Arabia, over the Egyptian and Sumerian once thriving theologies?
Actually Judaism didn’t, surpass the influence of the Egyptian nor the Sumerian theology; this was a formidably hard task for any nomadic community to aspire for, instead Judaism did it the easy way. As the antiquity era was approaching an end, and as the hieroglyphic and the cuneiform writings were getting extinct, the Hebrews simply stole the Egyptian and the Sumerian thunder.
The Hebrew scribes, whom I presume knew what they were doing, copycatted the famous myths/epics of ancient Egypt and Sumer, in what could be the world’s first and yet the biggest copyright infringement, and stuffed their Bible with them.
The Hebrews as nomadic tribes, and later as tradesmen, were always on the move all over the west coast of ancient Arabia (ancient Incense route) that was bounded to the west by Egypt and to the east by Sumer and Babylon (Mesopotamia). Their constant journeys gave them access to the famous epics and stories/myths of the ancient Near East.
When The Hebrew scribes began to write down some of their old (Arabian) stories, which they never thought would one day be deemed as ‘holy Bible’, it was not an overnight job. Rather, writing the book of Hebrew tales was a lengthy and interrupted process that may have started sometime after the release from Babylonian Captivity (539 BCE) and culminated around the time of the Hellenistic period (332-63 BCE). During that time all of – the so called – Ancient Canaan was virtually an Egyptian province (In my book I reveal how Ancient Palestine was never called Canaan)
Ancient Near East
While geography was the reason behind the development of the brilliant civilizations of both the Egyptians and the Sumerians, it was on the other side, and ironically enough, the main cause for the Hebrews’ misfortune.
Delivered to the savagery of the clans and Squeezed in a land barren and hostile between the ancient superpowers without any chance of military resistance or evolving further beyond the nomadic/unsettled structure, the Jews turned to metaphysics and began to fantasize.
In an atmosphere of despair and rage, especially after the Romans ruthlessly crushed what was seen as the last Hebrew disobedience (66-70 CE) the Jewish religious megalomaniac Messianic fantasies prospered. The powerlessness of the Jews found an outlet in the myths and invented a glorious national history- something similar to what modern day Zionism did – avenging long years of ostracism and cruelty and dragging their enemy’s names through the dirt.
Actually Judaism first evolved as an Arabian local cult. From the start, according to the ancient Arabian culture, Judaism relied on rabbinical oral laws and teachings (tribal laws in essence)
It was only after the Babylonian Captivity that the Rabbis had thought of writing down their oral teachings. Contrary to the Israelite gloomy depiction of the Captivity, this deportation had been an enlightening experience for the ancient Israelites. Those herds of Israelite Bedouins/nomads for the first time had a rare encounter with a superior urban civilization. The Babylonians were settled urban communities with a unique culture, .e.g., art, architecture, theology and mythology.
This is when the Hebrew scribes, by default or by design, had incorporated many of the ancient Sumerian and Assyrian mythology and blended them into their new book.
In the Bible, the Hebrew scribes unleashed the dagger of malevolence and took a stab at the superpowers of the ancient world, namely Egypt, Sumer and Babylon.
Through a prism of total prejudice and deeply seated grudge the Hebrew scribes wrote, page up and page down, not what really happened in ancient times, but rather what they wished had happened.
So, in their scrolls, the Hebrew scribes depicted Babel (Babylon) as the (hot bed of vice) with its tower in ruin, where in reality it stood 90 meters high, and Egypt as the land of slavery and tyranny, devastated by Yahweh’s gruesome plagues in the aftermath of which Egypt’s Pharaoh and his army drowned, where in fact, Egypt stood, for uninterrupted 3000 years, as one of the ancient world’s superpowers. At that time, something quite weird, that only analytical psychology could explain, started taking place in the Hebrew Bible.
Everything the Israelites desperately longed for (namely a mythology with fascinating stories like that of the Sumerians, a religion with big temples like that of the Egyptians … and yes, a piece of land they could call home like everybody else) the Hebrew scribes made damn sure it was granted to them on the pages of their bible.
And in the process of making up a virtual/counterfactual history for the Israelites, the bible scribes had to simply rewrite the ancient Near Eastern history in a way that would make room for their tribal patriarchs to fit into its history.
In a cunning way, the Hebrew scribes, as they wrote down the scripture of their Bible, had plagiarized the ancient Near Eastern wisdom and claimed it theirs. Copying the ancient and profound Egyptian/Mesopotamian mythology by a bunch of mysterious Hebrew scribes was, from my perspective, the beginning of the deterioration of human religious thinking.
Defaced Monotheism
Unlike the Greek mythology, the ancient Near Eastern mythology was denied, by the demise of the ancient languages and the Hebrew alteration/defacement of its stories the golden opportunity of producing/fostering a European-like renaissance.
The Hebrews, appropriating what otherwise could have stayed as one of the world’s finest myths and theology, have turned it into a completely different thing.
They have molded it into a tribal thing; the universal nature of the Egyptian gods, e.g., Amun, Aten, had been twisted and refashioned to function only as the Hebrews’ own exclusive god, and hence the Hebrews as his own chosen people. And in a way this dominating concept of favoritism/nepotism has, and for the first time in the history of mankind, introduced/nurtured the idea of religious extremism.
Usurping the profound mythology of the ancient Near East by the Israelites, was like snatching the original score of Franz Schubert’s last and unfinished symphony and handing it over to some tribal drum player to finish the job. Need we ponder over the product of such undertaking? … Nothing short of a total catastrophe.
Some will argue that the echoing of the Sumerian and Egyptian myths and beliefs in the Hebrew Bible is but another example of interaction/influence amongst the different cultures of the ancient Near East.

To be sure, the Sumerians could not have influenced the Hebrews directly, for they had ceased to exist long before the Hebrew people came into existence. But there is little doubt that the Sumerians had deeply influenced the Canaanites, who preceded the Hebrews in the land that later came to be known as Palestine” pp.143-4, “History Begins at Sumer” Samuel Noah Kramer.
First of all the Israelites had never been in Canaan, North Yemen and south Ancient Arabia is where Israelites’ tribe and their Patriarchs’ stories took place. You could read all about it in my book “Egypt Knew no Pharaohs nor Israelites”
Secondly, of course the Hebrews/Israelites were influenced by the Mesopotamian literature and the Egyptian Theology, but frankly, the Hebrew case was more than just another cultural interaction; it was an act of infringement.
And even if by time, the Sumerian and Egyptian myths had probably turned into anecdotal tales of the distant past, how could we explain the reason/motive why the names of the main characters were extracted out and replaced by Hebrew counterfeits. … Moreover, with all the previous overlooked, how could we forgive the Hebrews’ wickedness of ascribing all this wisdom to their tribal god?
As their scribes were tampering with the history and the mythology of the ancient Near East, and through their ignorance/deceit the Israelites messed up not only with the great stories of Egypt and Sumer but they also damaged the concept of universalism and pluralism that for centuries characterized the religious thinking of the ancient Near East.
As the Hebrew scribes were tramping over the history of the ancient Near East they rewrote/invented a mythical table of nations (sons of Noah) that, at the end, and through a long cycle of selective favoritism, came down and as expected to favoring the sons of Shem (founding myth of modern day Semitism). And hence, the world through the tribal lens of the Israelites was only conceivable as Jews vs. Gentiles. This lingering duality complex that denied the Jews, till this very day, the ability to assimilate anywhere outside the psychological orbit of the tribe.

Contrary to what many may believe the Hebrew bible did invent/create the idea of monotheism, the Egyptian king Akhenaten did that and centuries before Judaism, and as a matter of fact YHWH, the Israelites’ one god had a consort by the name ‘Asherah’ On the other hand, the Sumerian and Egyptian pantheon of gods were pyramidal/hierarchical in a way that was feeding into the concept of one and supreme god presiding over the pantheon – aka Henotheism.
Sigmund Freud
In his famous book, Moses and monotheism, Sigmund Freud concluded that monotheism was not a Jewish but an Egyptian invention, descending from the cult of the Egyptian sun god Aten. Moreover, upon applying his psychoanalysis to the myths/stories of the Hebrew bible, Freud not only argued that Moses was an Egyptian priest but he was also perplexed by how the whole story of Moses/Exodus, according to the oedipal pattern of analysis, was inverted and didn’t make sense the way it had been told. In other words the Hebrew myths/stories didn’t seem original.
Had Freud lived longer, delved deeper into the mythology of the ancient Near East, he would have reached the same startling conclusion about the origin of the Hebrew bible stories, as he did monotheism.
What Judaism actually added to the world’s religious thinking is something totally different and, at the same time, inherently harmful. Through their tribal and somehow shallow collective mentality, the Hebrews had planted the root of religious dogmatism and fanaticism when they allowed for the absurd idea of God’s chosen people to flourish and permeate the religious thinking from then on.
Unfortunately that religious extremism passed on to Christianity, which was supposed to act as a counterbalance to Judaism’s tribal vulgarity, until it reached its worst case in Islam. What good is this kind of monotheism when its adherents, be it Jews, Christians or Muslims, are soaked to the skin in their fundamental belief/illusion that their god is the only true god and hence they are the true sons/believers … and that the others are just deluded people who somehow got lost along the way to salvation.
Dividing the world into Jews and Goyim is simply the Jewish idea of monotheism, or in other words, the Jewish defacement of monotheism which we today and most unfortunately still endure through its long term fallouts. What kind of god, who would favor a particular son and detest/abandon his others.
This was something totally new to the Ancient Near East. May be the Egyptians had their own gods, but that did not prevent them from respecting Babylonian gods like Ishtar or acknowledging their power. Even when Alexander the great or the Greeks, known as Ptolemies, invaded Egypt, they continued to worship the ancient Egyptian gods alongside theirs. And sometimes the ancient gods of the two cultures were combined (Syncretized) in one divinity, as in the brilliant example of the syncretized god, Serapis (half Greek, half Egyptian), who stood in glory for hundreds of years inside the ancient temples of Alexandria and at the gate of its legendary library (later burned down by a mob of early extremist Christians)

Compared to the monotheism of Akhenaten and his god Aten, the prejudiced monotheism of Judaism- based mainly on the principle of nepotism/favoritism- was such a dangerous setback for the ancient religious thinking.
The Aten, contrary to the tribal version of Yahew, was a universal god, a sun disk that stretched out its rays all over the earth and blessed everybody, not just the Egyptians. The Hebrew scribes, in a cheap bid to grant a piece of land to the Israelites, and by default or design, had stripped the mythology of ancient Sumer and the theology of Egypt of its mysticism, universalism and wisdom.
The Talmudic/tribal influence of Judaism on later religions (Christianity and Islam) weighed heavily on world religious evolution and thinking. The former has been since paralyzed and frozen (beyond hope) in medieval times and the latter immersed in dogmatism and violence (beyond redemption)

Even the “Jewish monotheism” was seemingly a late addition. The first of the ‘Ten Commandments’ is “I am the Lord God. Thou shalt have no other Gods before me’, NOT ‘Thou shalt have no other Gods’. Throughout the Old Testament to the Hebrews pray to other Gods, their ‘Yahweh’ and his followers are angered, NOT because they’re praying to idols, but because they’re praying to other Gods. Likewise, in the story of Moses and ‘Pharaoh’, one of the best-known scenes has Pharaoh’s men throwing down their staffs, which are all then turned into snakes by their tribal Gods. Moses meanwhile throws down HIS staff, which Yahweh turns into a snake, which then kills the other snake-staffs. So, it’s clear that the Hebrews believed in a pantheon of Gods, it was just that their God Yahweh was a jealous, angry God who didn’t want to share with the other Gods.

Lucifer is mentioned once in the Old Testament (Torah) which is in the Book of Isaiah, chapter 14:12. However in the ORIGINAL text, which is in Hebrew, the name Lucifer does not appear. This passage is not even about a fallen angel, nor some devil. It’s about a “fallen” king named Nebuchadnezzar who persecuted the children of Israel, which pissed off Jehovah and caused Nebuchadnezzar to lose his place as a king.
The scribes of the Christian religion later on decided for themselves that they wanted the story to be about a “fallen angel” who is not even mentioned in the original texts. They used the name “Lucifer” and degraded him as some “disobedient angel” who was cast out of “Heaven” to rule eternally in “Hell.” So now according to Christian eschatology the so-called “devil” (which is a corruption of “devi”) and his “angels” will be defeated by their puny Nazarene in “the final battle” and all those who rebelled against their “God’s” authority will be punished in a Lake of Fire forever.
The problem here is that NONE of what the Christian religion teaches about Lucifer-Satan being a rebellious entity contrary to their “God” has an actual foundation in the original Hebrew version of the Old Testament… Therefore it contradicts their teachings of the more ancient scripture which Christianity is supposed to be based on.
The purpose of the abrahamic cults is to bring the world under Jewish domination. It’s a tool for the Zionist agenda.

Dr. Ezzatt, I have read your book with great interest. I am neither a christian (although raised in a Christian area in the world) nor muslim. Religion or believe says it all. men needs to believe in the stories, etc, told. There is no proof because then it would be called science. You made an appealing story where science meets religion. Only well thinking people who are not relegious want to see the content of scriptures like the bible been proven by archeology, geograpphy, etc. You are adding a very interesting point in that search. As I cannot judge, proof or disproof what you are stating I can only say “it makes sense what you say, explains a lot of the trouble we are experiencing today in relation to religious struggles and it it at the least a must follow up for more research, especially in the areas you describe in the sense of excavations etc”. Is Saudi Arabia not willing to collaborate in this as it would proof their land could be the cradle of western civilization and that indeed other (older) civilizations like the Egyptian were not involved in this one. I see on this site a lot of angry reactions of people hurt. As it is very difficult to let go of established ideas when proven wrong or at least doubtful by new research. You only have to follow the discusions about cancer as a genetic or metabolic disease for that.

Well my take on all this is slightly different…I think the Jews plagiarized the Hebrews who plagiarized the Egyptians and Sumers…the reason is simple for me anyway…there is no mention of Jew in the OT until they were kicked out of Babylon…thus bringing the Talmud with them and adapting the Hebrews view to capitulate some sort of kinship….and were they of use to the Persians seeing Pharisee is a Persian name or term….I read an acrticle a while back claiming that the Persians actually created the term Jew…you don’t read about it until late in 2nd Kings prior to that the term Jew never was introduced in the OT…could Jews be from Babylon…Plus the teachings of Christ follows along the same ideology of the Zoroastrian religion and that was Persian…so could it be that the Hebrew did adapt to new and various beliefs and were that flexible…Christ was not a Jew…they wanted to kill him..for he was out of Nazareth which was a Hebrew enclave in Israel and Jerusalem was in Judah…Jesus rarely taught in Jerusalem..IMHO

If the Jewish/Hebrew writers stole stories and the idea of having a mythological God from other cultures to make themselves seem as a people that they’re not, wouldn’t you think they would make themslves appear as good as the other nations made themselves appear? As powerful and good people through and through? On the contrary, the Israelites are depicted, by their own writers, as something different. Yes we read they are the only chosen nation by the One and only True and Living God (YAHWEH/YAHWAH). The God that performed miraculous acts on their behalf and gave them a land where they built cities and temples. But the bible also depicts them as a disobedient, disloyal, unapreciative people. A people that even after their God would bless them, deliver them out of bondage, give there enemies into their hand, they would still turn there backs on Him and chase after other nations mythological Gods, as you yourself referred to them as? We see no other culture writing about themselves in this way. The fact that these Jewish writers did so helps me to believe in these writer’s authenticity (referring to original writings, not tampered with writings). In fact the old testament ends with them in captivity and the new testament begins and ends with Jewish people still in captivity. At the very end of the old testament we read what was written about their prophecies of a coming Messiah being fulfilled in the person of YAHUSHUA son of YAHWAH / YAHWEH through Joseph and Mary. I know people say that’s in the new testament, but that’s just because of mans interference with the scriptures (read Hebrews 9:16, 17). Now back to the subject. They didn’t recognize Him as the fulfillment of prophecy and had Him killed at the hands of their hated captors (Rome). Wow! Why would they write this if it weren’t true. At that point until now, it’s in the Hebrew YAHUSHUA (Jesus) era, men have to live by Faith to get our rewards. It gets even more interesting. Why? Because this Hope is now not just for the Jewish people. Through YAHUSHUA it’s available to all men who believe in Him. This actually made the nonbelieving Jews angry and they actually became a major opposition against good in the “stories” of these Jewish writers. Again who would write this about their own people unless it were true?

I just wanted to add my two-cent comment that it would have been a much readable piece had it only focused on the fact that the origins of Jewish monotheism were based on the polytheist Sumerian civilization, i.e. without finger pointing at early Jewish tribes for their hidden agenda for hiding the origins of their religious beliefs.

So it would have been as natural for the Jews not to associate their beliefs with those of Sumer, while the huge influence is undeniable. As it is true that there is nothing in Quran that does not have its origins in Bible – with some exceptions such as “Ginn” which is a Sumer word, but missing in Bible and the concept of looting which was a local custom – yet any true Moslem and even Most scholars would forgo that fact even today while it is so verifiable.
The result of a promoting the truth about the origins of religious thought will be more effective without blaming any one culture for wanting to establish their societies while borrowing from others. The act itself shows the richness of the culture being assimilated.

Since you are obviously biased against Jews & Christians, why did you not provide a contrast showing the more generous, inclusive nature of the preceding world views? What evidence do we have that the Sumerians or Egytians were ever any more inclusive, accepting other cultures’ religious views as possibly complimentary to their own? Human nature being what it is, I suspect they too thought themselves as the only possessors of truth regarding their God and their special status as true believers.
What is the point of this stupid article. Everything human builds on what went before. I assume Ezzat is a Muslim. There is allot of hebrew scriptures that read with great authority. God said this, God said that etc etc. But I guess because it’s similar to the egyptian and sumerian text that anything that does not line up with the egyptian or sumerian is a lie and God only speaks through egyptians & sumerians but not hebrews. The Annunaki gods did NOT make man to dig for gold on their behalf. That is Stitchen’s nonsense. The ancient texts reveal that man was created to be an agricultural slave of the gods, to plant food, harvest it and present it to them to eat in temple sacrifices. Why? The gods had bodies of flesh in the early myths, they could kill each other, die and wind up in the underworld called Edin. Their fleshly bodies could experience hunger and they could starve to death. They made their city-gardens in Edin, in cities they had built for themselves. There was a revolt of the lesser gods called the Igigi, who said working in the city-gardens of Edin was back-breaking, they wanted a rest from toil like the Annunaki, so they threatened to kill their Annunaki masters. The gods would never expel man the agricultural slave from their gardens! Why? To do so would mean the gods would have to care for their gardens themselves, a task they abhorred because the work was back-breaking. The Hebrews, via an inversion, claimed life was good and pleasant working in Eden’s garden and that God expelled his gardener for trespassing his command. As regards determining how old the Bible really is: Archaeologists have unearthed cities mentioned by Moses circa 1445 BC who is supposed to have written the Pentateuch (the first 5 books of the Bible) under inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The problem? Some of the cities did not come into existence until 700 years after Moses’ death! Other cities mentioned by Moses did exist physically in 1445 BC but they were deserted in Moses’ days, and had been abandoned hundreds of years before Moses had been born! The archaeologists came to realize based on what they had unearthed that Moses, circa 1445 BC, had not written the Pentateuch, someone had written it sometime after the 8th century BC instead the 15th century BC and had succeeded in fraudulently passing it off as Moses’ work! When was the Pentateuch written? The Primary History, Genesis to 2 Kings, is a linear history of the world beginning with Adam and Eve being exiled from Eden and ending with Israel and Judah in Exile, expelled from their land for the same crime as Adam and Eve, disobeying God This feature is called a “Ring Composition,” the beginning foretells the ending: Exile for disobedience for Adam and Israel and Judah. The last datable event in this work is the mention of a Babylonian King called Evil Merodach (2 Kings 25:27), who, from Babylonian records, was assassinated in a palace putsch in 560 BC, he came to the throne in 562 BC. Endings provide a date for when the work was composed, so the Pentateuch was apparently written between 562-560 BC in the Babylonian Exile to explain why Israel and Judah were in Exile. All this is common knowledge for university trained scholars, but it hasn’t filtered down to the communities of belief, be they Jewish, Christian or Moslem for obvious reasons.

‘Fragment P52’ oldest surviving Greek New Testament was in the time of Hadrian and has been challenged by Andreas Schmidt, who favours a date around 170 AD (late 2nd century).

There is no evidence that Shem and Noah ever existed but there is plenty of evidence that the illiterate hebrews got their alphabet from others and when later in captivity in Babylon saw the annual performance of the great Enuma Elish creation cycle, learned about the flood story, and began incorporating these stories into their own writings. There is no evidence that they had any awareness of them prior to exposure to the high Egyptian and Babylonian civilizations.

No, it is well known and established fact in the academic world. We now have access to vast ancient libraries and records of the ancient civilizations that predate the appearance of the hebrews and it is obvious to anyone of a scholarly objective nature that the stories of the torah have been plagiarized by the hebrews for their own selfish ends, The true crime is that not only do they steal others culture and claim it to be their own, they also defame and lie about these great near eastern civilizations in a pathetic attempt to make their own manufactured “history” appear great and noble by comparison.

I became aware of all of these issues in the 1980s at University and the information has been avaiable to scholars since the 19th century and the case has only become stronger throughout the 20th and eary 21st. c. You need to catch up with the science on this topic.
I pretty much agree with Georges. The problem is that this knowledge is not widely disseminated to the general public. Partially, to avoid offending those of faith, be they Christian, Jew or Moslem. Public schools don’t teach this info out of fear of offending their clientele, the communities of Faith. It seems clear that the Judaic tradition borrowed from the Sumer-Babylonians, particularly as represented in the Pentateuch (the first 5 books of the Old Testament, most notably Genesis), although it’s still not clear (to me at least) what the origins of YHWH are, and arguably the epithet is potentially a pure Jewish invention and creation.
What is the evidence that Jewish monotheism has its origins in the cult of Amun in Egypt? Guess I should read Freud…
After doing a lot of research here, particularly on the development of monotheism in western civilization, it seems clear that the story is much more complicated than presented in your article here – with cross-cultural borrowing and pilfering going on throughout the Mediterranean and Near East dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. To single out the Jewish tradition as plagiarizers is not only an unfair assessment of how their tradition evolved, but fundamentally inaccurate based upon the written, archeological, philological and genetic evidence that points to a much more complex monotheistic evolutionary process.

Been digging into this a little more as of late, just crafted a piece on Judaism and Zoroastrianism (www.snowconenyc.com) that covers some ground. The deeper you dig the less clear the relationship between all the ancient monotheistic traditions appears actually, although no doubt there was lots of borrowing going on between cultures and mystics alike.

Like Snowconenyc, I too wondered about the pre-biblical origins of the Bible especially the Garden of Eden story. After studying what PhD scholars have written, and my own personal study of Egyptian myths as well as Canaanite, and Mesopotamian, I came to conclude there is very little Egyptian myth in the Bible, its mostly recast Mesopotamian and Canaanite. I have a website on the subject if interested, http://www.bibleorigins.net which explores the pre-biblical origins of both the Old and New Testaments. I have written two books (self-published) in 2010, available at Amazon.com, Eden’s Serpent: Its Mesopotamian Origins, and The Garden of Eden Myth: Its Pre-biblical Origins in Mesopotamian Myths. The approach is anthropological with lots of citations to PhD scholars’ works from circa 1845 to 2010. I discovered the main sources for the Eden myth were (1) The Epic of Gilgamesh, and (2) Adapa and the South Wind Myth. Eden is Sumer’s Edin, the steppe land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Adam is Enkidu and Eve is Shamhat, while Sadu the hunter was recast as Yahweh-god (All of the Epic of Gilgamesh). From the Adapa myth, Adapa has been recast as Adam, Yahweh is a recast of two gods, Ea of Eridu and Anu of Heaven. The Cherubbim are recasts of the gods Ningishzida and Dumuzi. Eve is a recast of Dumuzi and Ningishzida. The food of death and food of life (bread) were recast as fruit from two trees (the fig tree is tree of knowledge in Genesis and the datepalm is the tree of life). The Flood theme is from the Mesopotamian Atrahasis myth, Atrahasis being recast as Noah, and the god Ea of Eridu and Enlil of Nippur being fused together to become Yahweh. The notion Adam is made of dust is Canaanite versus clay in Mesopotamian myths.

Some cryptic comments – I find some things difficult to explain.
1. The Pyramids were built for BALANCE. That is what I think they are really about. They were built to give balance to the Four Functions such as
Earth Fire Water and Air. The four sides represent those four fundamentals.
They have to be in balance for Life.
They end in a point, pointing to Space – Emptiness – the open purity of the Sky and Space. That means Freedom, Joy and Purity beyond thinking and self clinging.

Please explain YHVH if you can? You claim knowledge so please, ‘enlighten’ us as to Who, What, When, Where, Why and How GOD is; if you can do that, then you have the beginning of wisdom. In regards to “stealing mythology” – let’s consider the times. There are no means of mass communication. It takes days to weeks and long to move from one area to the next even of short distances. The books that contain these stories were written hundreds to thousands of years after the stories originated. That means that before they were written down (by any civilization) they were first passed down orally from generation to generation over a span of thousands of years. To claim that one culture knowingly ‘stole’ this mythology in an attempt to create a chosen people or claim power over others is plain ludicrous. It’s like a giant game of telephone. Names and events within these stories are going to change over time to fit the current way of life and understanding as does the language of those doing the story-telling. Each generation putting their own personality into it. This isn’t plagiarism, it is adaptation. For all we know, the jewish tribes that passed on these stories and wrote the bible could have been of egyptian lineage that decided to leave the area out of rebellion against the king of that era. If one culture creates something, say, the pyramid, and then splits into two separate cultures, does either one really own the right to build another pyramid or is that now a shared right?

No different than what our modern day societies have required of us via legal systems void of spirituality.

Of course it was based on the Sumerians. Because that is where the people came from. As did everyone else. Jews, Muslims, Christians and every society we know came from the same people. Even the story of Jesus was told by many different cultures long before the Christian Jesus even lived. We all started in the same place but as tribes expanded throughout the globe, the geographic separation causes changes in language and how stories are remembered and passed down over time. The important thing to remember is that no matter what culture it is, it is only a bunch of stories attempting to explain things that the current science of the age was unable to do.

It was Ut-Nishpatim to who, God whispered through the reed walls of his house in ancient Sumeria, telling him to hurry to build an ark. And it wa Hammurabi who was inspired by God to inscribe The Law onto stone – and the inscribed rocks were placed all over ancient Iraq. There is one to be seen in the Louvre in Paris still. Those still in Iraq have probably been stolen or destroyed by the recent invaders.

I don’t know what to believe these days. I don’t want to believe in the supernatural, but as a teenager my family and I experienced and witnessed the most terrifying supernatural/paranormal events over a several month period. I was a normal atheist up until then.
I come to sites like this looking for vindication of my atheism, but what depresses me is that I can’t reason away the experiences I had. How can I even discuss it without ridicule? Al the classic aspects from haunting stories are true, after all. So many times we’d watch apparitions materialize, objects fly across the room, doors slam, voices calling our names, levitations, and so on.
There is definitely more to reality than the material. I hope there’s some sort of benevolent god or power or whatever to balance out the malevolent forces, seeing as my wish to be a complete atheist/materialist isn’t going to come true. I wish there were no demons or bogeymen in the shadows.

I am well aware that there are Jewish fundamentalists who believe the bible is literal history and a justification for their own bigotry. This article does a nice job refuting that point of view, since the bible is clearly related to other ancient traditions.
However, to cal the bible a plagerism or a copyright infringement is nonsense. The biblical authors were simply drawing from the some sources as the Egyptians, Sumerians and others and putting their own interpretations out there. There are native American groups, for example, that have a flood story, would it be reasonable to say they “stole” from the Sumerians? Of course not. They recognized a truth about ancient humanity’s development and created their own version of the story.
The story of the tree of knowledge of good and evil is not some copyrighted story, it is a way to express humanity’s ascent from a more animal like state into a more knowing state and the loss of innocence that came with that. Saying one group “stole” it from another group is missing the point.
You cant make that argument to defend the bible, for the bible itself denies those sources u speak of. WHICH MEANS the good doctor is correct in his framing;-)

Are there similarities amongst ancient literary works? Of course; people have similar interests and a common history to deal with. Why is the Hebrew Bible a work of plagiarism and not the works of Egypt, Sumer, etc.? Why is it not possible it is actually the other way around?
If two people see and experience an identical event (Tower of Babel?) and one writes it down immediately, and the other writes it down four years later, is one necessarily ‘plagiarizing’ the other?
How about if these two people believe different things, religiously speaking. Are they each not going to interpret that same event differently? Could one not be right and the other wrong? I am confused. The article contains this quote:

I personally believe in the story of Adam n Eve and if there is a similar story in Summeria it gives more evidence to its occurence. Myth always contains some elements of truth so the original story was altered as time progressed. Then God decided to restore the true story and communicate it through prophets he chose who could eventually write it down for future generations to read. God is the author of His-tory and he made sure to give mankind a correct record of events important for our future salvation. Cain and Abel along with the garden and other stories told in Genesis probably contain different elements of truth in myths also passed down.

Go back to the paragraph you are quoting. Nowhere does it say “when the Hebrew bible was but a distant memory”. You might have, on first reading, seen only what you wanted to see. There is no question that the Egyptians, Babylonians and Sumerians predate the Hebrews. The Doctor neglected, though, to mention Zoroaster, a Persian, whose concepts of monotheism occured slightly before Akhenaten’s. Otherwise, I agree completely with his opinions.

This is your believe which is fine and great for you, but you have no proof or anything else that confirms this. Do you never wondered why God or Jesus (who’s name never appeared untill much later in Greek translations as Illiousus) only appeared to e few selected people and not to the complete society they were amongst. Like after Jesus’s supposed reerrection from his grave, he only appaered to a few. Why not, if is he was God almighty, to the full crowd of Jerusalem including the Romans, all the people and the priests?? Would that not have ended any discussions! Even the “Jewish monotheism” was seemingly a late addition. The first of the ‘Ten Commandments’ is “I am the Lord God. Thou shalt have no other Gods before me’, NOT ‘Thou shalt have no other Gods’. Throughout the Old Testament to the Hebrews pray to other Gods, their ‘Yahweh’ and his followers are angered, NOT because they’re praying to idols, but because they’re praying to other Gods. Likewise, in the story of Moses and ‘Pharaoh’, one of the best-known scenes has Pharaoh’s men throwing down their staffs, which are all then turned into snakes by their tribal Gods. Moses meanwhile throws down HIS staff, which Yahweh turns into a snake, which then kills the other snake-staffs. So, it’s clear that the Hebrews believed in a pantheon of Gods, it was just that their God Yahweh was a jealous, angry God who didn’t want to share with the other Gods.

The Judeo-Christian ideology of Satan is nothing more than a slanderous caricature created for the purpose of making the populace want to avoid him at all costs. You don’t know anything.
Lucifer is mentioned once in the Old Testament (Torah) which is in the Book of Isaiah, chapter 14:12. However in the ORIGINAL text, which is in Hebrew, the name Lucifer does not appear. This passage is not even about a fallen angel, nor some devil. It’s about a “fallen” king named Nebuchadnezzar who persecuted the children of Israel, which pissed off Jehovah and caused Nebuchadnezzar to lose his place as a king.
The scribes of the Christian religion later on decided for themselves that they wanted the story to be about a “fallen angel” who is not even mentioned in the original texts. They used the name “Lucifer” and degraded him as some “disobedient angel” who was cast out of “Heaven” to rule eternally in “Hell.” So now according to Christian eschatology the so-called “devil” (which is a corruption of “devi”) and his “angels” will be defeated by their puny Nazarene in “the final battle” and all those who rebelled against their “God’s” authority will be punished in a Lake of Fire forever.
The problem here is that NONE of what the Christian religion teaches about Lucifer-Satan being a rebellious entity contrary to their “God” has an actual foundation in the original Hebrew version of the Old Testament… Therefore it contradicts their teachings of the more ancient scripture which Christianity is supposed to be based on.

Dr. Ezzatt, I have read your book with great interest. I am neither a christian (although raised in a Christian area in the world) nor muslim. Religion or believe says it all. men needs to believe in the stories, etc, told. There is no proof because then it would be called science. You made an appealing story where science meets religion. Only well thinking people who are not relegious want to see the content of scriptures like the bible been proven by archeology, geograpphy, etc. You are adding a very interesting point in that search. As I cannot judge, proof or disproof what you are stating I can only say “it makes sense what you say, explains a lot of the trouble we are experiencing today in relation to religious struggles and it it at the least a must follow up for more research, especially in the areas you describe in the sense of excavations etc”. Is Saudi Arabia not willing to collaborate in this as it would proof their land could be the cradle of western civilization and that indeed other (older) civilizations like the Egyptian were not involved in this one. I see on this site a lot of angry reactions of people hurt. As it is very difficult to let go of established ideas when proven wrong or at least doubtful by new research. You only have to follow the discusions about cancer as a genetic or metabolic disease for that.

Well my take on all this is slightly different…I think the Jews plagiarized the Hebrews who plagiarized the Egyptians and Sumers…the reason is simple for me anyway…there is no mention of Jew in the OT until they were kicked out of Babylon…thus bringing the Talmud with them and adapting the Hebrews view to capitulate some sort of kinship….and were they of use to the Persians seeing Pharisee is a Persian name or term….I read an acrticle a while back claiming that the Persians actually created the term Jew…you don’t read about it until late in 2nd Kings prior to that the term Jew never was introduced in the OT…could Jews be from Babylon…Plus the teachings of Christ follows along the same ideology of the Zoroastrian religion and that was Persian…so could it be that the Hebrew did adapt to new and various beliefs and were that flexible…Christ was not a Jew…they wanted to kill him..for he was out of Nazareth which was a Hebrew enclave in Israel and Jerusalem was in Judah…Jesus rarely taught in Jerusalem..IMHO

If the Jewish/Hebrew writers stole stories and the idea of having a mythological God from other cultures to make themselves seem as a people that they’re not, wouldn’t you think they would make themslves appear as good as the other nations made themselves appear? As powerful and good people through and through? On the contrary, the Israelites are depicted, by their own writers, as something different. Yes we read they are the only chosen nation by the One and only True and Living God (YAHWEH/YAHWAH). The God that performed miraculous acts on their behalf and gave them a land where they built cities and temples. But the bible also depicts them as a disobedient, disloyal, unapreciative people. A people that even after their God would bless them, deliver them out of bondage, give there enemies into their hand, they would still turn there backs on Him and chase after other nations mythological Gods, as you yourself referred to them as? We see no other culture writing about themselves in this way. The fact that these Jewish writers did so helps me to believe in these writer’s authenticity (referring to original writings, not tampered with writings). In fact the old testament ends with them in captivity and the new testament begins and ends with Jewish people still in captivity. At the very end of the old testament we read what was written about their prophecies of a coming Messiah being fulfilled in the person of YAHUSHUA son of YAHWAH / YAHWEH through Joseph and Mary. I know people say that’s in the new testament, but that’s just because of mans interference with the scriptures (read Hebrews 9:16, 17). Now back to the subject. They didn’t recognize Him as the fulfillment of prophecy and had Him killed at the hands of their hated captors (Rome). Wow! Why would they write this if it weren’t true. At that point until now, it’s in the Hebrew YAHUSHUA (Jesus) era, men have to live by Faith to get our rewards. It gets even more interesting. Why? Because this Hope is now not just for the Jewish people. Through YAHUSHUA it’s available to all men who believe in Him. This actually made the nonbelieving Jews angry and they actually became a major opposition against good in the “stories” of these Jewish writers. Again who would write this about their own people unless it were true?

I just wanted to add my two-cent comment that it would have been a much readable piece had it only focused on the fact that the origins of Jewish monotheism were based on the polytheist Sumerian civilization, i.e. without finger pointing at early Jewish tribes for their hidden agenda for hiding the origins of their religious beliefs.

So it would have been as natural for the Jews not to associate their beliefs with those of Sumer, while the huge influence is undeniable. No one has any way of knowing if the stories told by the Ancient Sumerians were indigenous to them! You have no idea of whether there may have been divergent variations of creation, the creation of humans and the flood and so on that both Hebrew and Sumerian traditions are traced back to.
Stories are created and disseminated through time and culture and cross cultures. What is significant in oral traditions is not ownership of a text, but what do the variations of the tale reveal about the people telling the story. Words have meaning, no one owns them, but how we put the words together reveal the greater meaning. Narrative elements, motifs, are a kind of language themselves. No one owns them; how the story teller puts the narrative elements together reveals the greater meaning.
Many people of faith simply belief that the mythic stories of Genesis was divinely inspired. A deity inspired story tellers to take existing motifs and retell them to express a message about that divinity.
Thomas Aquinas expresses that God uses the idioms of human beings to speak to us. He talks to us on our level not his. What better way to speak to the Ancient Hebrews then to use the elements of the tales and stories that were familiar to them but to reshape them to his own use?

In doing so they became the first culture to achieve a certain level of alphabetisation, they became the first civilisation to write their annals of history in each subsequent book in the old testament where we can learn about David, Salomon, etc.

While the basic premise you put forth, that the Jews probably got many of their ideas about creation, and monotheism from more ancient sources has much merit, your argument loses some credibility by the use of prerogatives such as “fraudulent” “stole” “defacement” or “cheap bid”. I think it far more likely that the Jewish scribes at least partially believed in the more ancient myths and retold them in terms of the different culture of their time.
Since you are obviously biased against Jews & Christians, why did you not provide a contrast showing the more generous, inclusive nature of the preceding world views? What evidence do we have that the Sumerians or Egytians were ever any more inclusive, accepting other cultures’ religious views as possibly complimentary to their own? Human nature being what it is, I suspect they too thought themselves as the only possessors of truth regarding their God and their special status as true believers.

What is the point of this stupid article. Everything human builds on what went before. I assume Ezzat is a Muslim. If he has read the Qur’an at all, he’ll know pretty clearly that Muhammad plagiarized the Hebrew Bible and the Gospels. So what? Much of what he took from individual Jews or Christians is distorted and inaccurate. So what? He had to depend ob something to get his ideas from. Scientists borrow from earlier scientists, writers from earlier writers, musicians from earlier musicians, entire cultures depend on earlier cultures for their architecture, their sculpture, their military techniques, their political theories. No culture and no religion is exempt from this rulew. So the only purpose behind this piece is to say unpleasant things about the Jews. There is allot of hebrew scriptures that read with great authority. God said this, God said that etc etc. But I guess because it’s similar to the egyptian and sumerian text that anything that does not line up with the egyptian or sumerian is a lie and God only speaks through egyptians & sumerians but not hebrews. I don’t buy the “just because it’s not as old as the egyptian and sumerian text then it’s lies and God did not speak with the hebrew people theory” this article suggest. Maybe it’s the older egyptian and sumerian writings that are the fakes written by the fallen angels who came to earth acting like they are God to trip people up. The Annunaki gods did NOT make man to dig for gold on their behalf. That is Stitchen’s nonsense. The ancient texts reveal that man was created to be an agricultural slave of the gods, to plant food, harvest it and present it to them to eat in temple sacrifices. Why? The gods had bodies of flesh in the early myths, they could kill each other, die and wind up in the underworld called Edin. As regards determining how old the Bible really is: Archaeologists have unearthed cities mentioned by Moses circa 1445 BC who is supposed to have written the Pentateuch (the first 5 books of the Bible) under inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The problem? Some of the cities did not come into existence until 700 years after Moses’ death! Other cities mentioned by Moses did exist physically in 1445 BC but they were deserted in Moses’ days, and had been abandoned hundreds of years before Moses had been born! The archaeologists came to realize based on what they had unearthed that Moses, circa 1445 BC, had not written the Pentateuch, someone had written it sometime after the 8th century BC instead the 15th century BC and had succeeded in fraudulently passing it off as Moses’ work! When was the Pentateuch written? The Primary History, Genesis to 2 Kings, is a linear history of the world beginning with Adam and Eve being exiled from Eden and ending with Israel and Judah in Exile, expelled from their land for the same crime as Adam and Eve, disobeying God This feature is called a “Ring Composition,” the beginning foretells the ending: Exile for disobedience for Adam and Israel and Judah. The last datable event in this work is the mention of a Babylonian King called Evil Merodach (2 Kings 25:27), who, from Babylonian records, was assassinated in a palace putsch in 560 BC, he came to the throne in 562 BC. Endings provide a date for when the work was composed, so the Pentateuch was apparently written between 562-560 BC in the Babylonian Exile to explain why Israel and Judah were in Exile. All this is common knowledge for university trained scholars, but it hasn’t filtered down to the communities of belief, be they Jewish, Christian or Moslem for obvious reasons.

This is one argument for them that they can never defend. There are sumerian tablets that are still preserved. These clay tablets are 1000-1500 years older than Moses’s Law (writings of Hebrew OT in tablets) yet are still intact and writings are readable.
Since there are nothing to hide, you can see those clay tablets were entirely not destroyed or lost throughout the millenia. But not for ‘Old Testament’. They do not seem to want original hebrew scriptures to exist. Why is this?

There is no evidence that Shem and Noah ever existed but there is plenty of evidence that the illiterate hebrews got their alphabet from others and when later in captivity in Babylon saw the annual performance of the great Enuma Elish creation cycle, learned about the flood story, and began incorporating these stories into their own writings. There is no evidence that they had any awareness of them prior to exposure to the high Egyptian and Babylonian civilizations.

No, it is well known and established fact in the academic world. We now have access to vast ancient libraries and records of the ancient civilizations that predate the appearance of the hebrews and it is obvious to anyone of a scholarly objective nature that the stories of the torah have been plagiarized by the hebrews for their own selfish ends, The true crime is that not only do they steal others culture and claim it to be their own, they also defame and lie about these great near eastern civilizations in a pathetic attempt to make their own manufactured “history” appear great and noble by comparison.
You need to spend a few years in a University research library on these topics before posting opinions on things you know nothing about.
I became aware of all of these issues in the 1980s at University and the information has been avaiable to scholars since the 19th century and the case has only become stronger throughout the 20th and eary 21st. c. You need to catch up with the science on this topic.

I pretty much agree with Georges. The problem is that this knowledge is not widely disseminated to the general public. Partially, to avoid offending those of faith, be they Christian, Jew or Moslem. Public schools don’t teach this info out of fear of offending their clientele, the communities of Faith. So children grow up into adults unaware that their faith is based on recast myths of Sumerians, Babylonians, Canaanites, and in few cases, desert nomads of Syria, Moab, and the Sinai.

It seems clear that the Judaic tradition borrowed from the Sumer-Babylonians, particularly as represented in the Pentateuch (the first 5 books of the Old Testament, most notably Genesis), although it’s still not clear (to me at least) what the origins of YHWH are, and arguably the epithet is potentially a pure Jewish invention and creation.

After doing a lot of research here, particularly on the development of monotheism in western civilization, it seems clear that the story is much more complicated than presented in your article here – with cross-cultural borrowing and pilfering going on throughout the Mediterranean and Near East dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. To single out the Jewish tradition as plagiarizers is not only an unfair assessment of how their tradition evolved, but fundamentally inaccurate based upon the written, archeological, philological and genetic evidence that points to a much more complex monotheistic evolutionary process.

Been digging into this a little more as of late, just crafted a piece on Judaism and Zoroastrianism (www.snowconenyc.com) that covers some ground. The deeper you dig the less clear the relationship between all the ancient monotheistic traditions appears actually, although no doubt there was lots of borrowing going on between cultures and mystics alike.

Like Snowconenyc, I too wondered about the pre-biblical origins of the Bible especially the Garden of Eden story. After studying what PhD scholars have written, and my own personal study of Egyptian myths as well as Canaanite, and Mesopotamian, I came to conclude there is very little Egyptian myth in the Bible, its mostly recast Mesopotamian and Canaanite. I have a website on the subject if interested, http://www.bibleorigins.net which explores the pre-biblical origins of both the Old and New Testaments. I have written two books (self-published) in 2010, available at Amazon.com, Eden’s Serpent: Its Mesopotamian Origins, and The Garden of Eden Myth: Its Pre-biblical Origins in Mesopotamian Myths. The approach is anthropological with lots of citations to PhD scholars’ works from circa 1845 to 2010. I discovered the main sources for the Eden myth were (1) The Epic of Gilgamesh, and (2) Adapa and the South Wind Myth. Eden is Sumer’s Edin, the steppe land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Adam is Enkidu and Eve is Shamhat, while Sadu the hunter was recast as Yahweh-god (All of the Epic of Gilgamesh). From the Adapa myth, Adapa has been recast as Adam, Yahweh is a recast of two gods, Ea of Eridu and Anu of Heaven. The Cherubbim are recasts of the gods Ningishzida and Dumuzi. Eve is a recast of Dumuzi and Ningishzida. The food of death and food of life (bread) were recast as fruit from two trees (the fig tree is tree of knowledge in Genesis and the datepalm is the tree of life). The Flood theme is from the Mesopotamian Atrahasis myth, Atrahasis being recast as Noah, and the god Ea of Eridu and Enlil of Nippur being fused together to become Yahweh. The notion Adam is made of dust is Canaanite versus clay in Mesopotamian myths.

Some cryptic comments – I find some things difficult to explain.
1. The Pyramids were built for BALANCE. That is what I think they are really about. They were built to give balance to the Four Functions such as

The natural or original Christianity which came from Egypt is most certainly not false or counterfeit. On the contrary, it is about Reality – and Nature. It is the most natural and real religion on could imagine!

In regards to “stealing mythology” – let’s consider the times. There are no means of mass communication. It takes days to weeks and long to move from one area to the next even of short distances. The books that contain these stories were written hundreds to thousands of years after the stories originated. That means that before they were written down (by any civilization) they were first passed down orally from generation to generation over a span of thousands of years. To claim that one culture knowingly ‘stole’ this mythology in an attempt to create a chosen people or claim power over others is plain ludicrous. It’s like a giant game of telephone. Names and events within these stories are going to change over time to fit the current way of life and understanding as does the language of those doing the story-telling. Each generation putting their own personality into it. This isn’t plagiarism, it is adaptation. For all we know, the jewish tribes that passed on these stories and wrote the bible could have been of egyptian lineage that decided to leave the area out of rebellion against the king of that era. If one culture creates something, say, the pyramid, and then splits into two separate cultures, does either one really own the right to build another pyramid or is that now a shared right?

Yes, personally I am a materialist in the physical sense. Water, air and everything else in nature are physical, material things. I believe that they exist. The people who wrote up the Old Testament made no mention of where the teachings came from – and the Egyptian teachings were very close by. Actually, Judea and most of that area was just an Egyptian province!
To have just stolen any of the mythology of others shows the mind of a beggar and a thief who has no appreciation of what the teachings MEAN.
No one can say that the Jews understand any of it to this day! They even think, and try to make everyone else on EArth also thaink,. that they are “chosen”! They have no understanding of the fact that God – whoever one thinks “God” is, whether the Buddha Nature, the Great Spirit or The Immensity, or Infinity – not only does not but CANNOT choose.
Infinite Compassion, Infinite Wisdom and Infinite Power cannot “choose”!
The Jews like to think they are intelligent but they are complete materialists – and they teach their new born babies that all of mankind hates them! Even in the womb they are subjected to all the hormones of fear and aggression.
What kind of people do this to little children – even their own? It seems to me to be something like what they call torture – and obviously it makes for very neurotic people.
It is a great pity for anyone to have a hard and stony heart – which they cover with sentimentality – but that is simply the way of the Jews.
I do not “hat Jews.” I certainly do detest their ideology! It all started with the “sinister Levites.” and it has gone on and on from there – tightly controlling any poor child born into Judaism.

Are you saying that every jew in the world is stupid, materialistic and without compassion? I don’t see where children are being taught that they are hated. I have seen children being taught to hate others, though, from all cultures.
You might actually want to ask a jew what they mean by saying that they are the “chosen” people. Every jew I have asked about that has told me that it is not an honor or anything so egocentric. To jews, being “chosen” to them means having a responsibility to abide by the laws of their covenent. Not that they are better, but that they are required to live by certain laws. No different than what our modern day societies have required of us via legal systems void of spirituality.

Also, for the record I do not believe in their ideology, or that of christians, muslims or any other culture that spouts any type of divine word. I believe that all religious doctrine are more an effort to explain their surroundings and existence, and create some sort of order to life than the word of any divine spirit. Had earlier cultures had the type of scientific data that we have today, “god” in any form would most likely never have been conceived of.

Of course it was based on the Sumerians. Because that is where the people came from. As did everyone else. Jews, Muslims, Christians and every society we know came from the same people. Even the story of Jesus was told by many different cultures long before the Christian Jesus even lived. It is clear that Ezzat hates the Jews by the way he writes with phrases like “in a cheap bid” , etc. but what Ezzat seems to not realize is that the very people he hates share the same ancestry as the people he doesn’t, including himself. We all started in the same place but as tribes expanded throughout the globe, the geographic separation causes changes in language and how stories are remembered and passed down over time. This is not plagiarism, it is simple evolution of how culture works. The important thing to remember is that no matter what culture it is, it is only a bunch of stories attempting to explain things that the current science of the age was unable to do.

I don’t believe Dr. Ezzat’s writings make it “clear that [he] hates the Jews”. We’ve got to stop censoring ideas by calling the people who express them racists or bigots. Otherwise, we are headed for a gigantic war on this planet. Today, while watching CNN, I heard of someone who is trying to pass a law against criticizing Islam. We already have a sort of invisible law against criticizing Judaism. If your beliefs cannot hold up to criticism, they are too pathetic to claim believers. I find much to criticize about Islam, Judaism and Christianity: among them, those three religions have caused more hatred and bloodshed than any other source of power on Earth, and all in the name of Peace and Love and the creator of the universe.

I don’t know what to believe these days. I don’t want to believe in the supernatural, but as a teenager my family and I experienced and witnessed the most terrifying supernatural/paranormal events over a several month period. I was a normal atheist up until then.
I come to sites like this looking for vindication of my atheism, but what depresses me is that I can’t reason away the experiences I had. How can I even discuss it without ridicule? Al the classic aspects from haunting stories are true, after all. So many times we’d watch apparitions materialize, objects fly across the room, doors slam, voices calling our names, levitations, and so on.
There is definitely more to reality than the material. I hope there’s some sort of benevolent god or power or whatever to balance out the malevolent forces, seeing as my wish to be a complete atheist/materialist isn’t going to come true. I wish there were no demons or bogeymen in the shadows.

I am well aware that there are Jewish fundamentalists who believe the bible is literal history and a justification for their own bigotry. This article does a nice job refuting that point of view, since the bible is clearly related to other ancient traditions.
However, to cal the bible a plagerism or a copyright infringement is nonsense. The biblical authors were simply drawing from the some sources as the Egyptians, Sumerians and others and putting their own interpretations out there. There are native American groups, for example, that have a flood story, would it be reasonable to say they “stole” from the Sumerians? Of course not. They recognized a truth about ancient humanity’s development and created their own version of the story.
The story of the tree of knowledge of good and evil is not some copyrighted story, it is a way to express humanity’s ascent from a more animal like state into a more knowing state and the loss of innocence that came with that. Saying one group “stole” it from another group is missing the point.

Are there similarities amongst ancient literary works? Of course; people have similar interests and a common history to deal with. Why is the Hebrew Bible a work of plagiarism and not the works of Egypt, Sumer, etc.? Why is it not possible it is actually the other way around?
If two people see and experience an identical event (Tower of Babel?) and one writes it down immediately, and the other writes it down four years later, is one necessarily ‘plagiarizing’ the other?
How about if these two people believe different things, religiously speaking. Are they each not going to interpret that same event differently? Could one not be right and the other wrong? Is only that which accepts Everything Else, in an uninhibited orgy of philosophical/religious syncretism, acceptable–no matter how irrational and self-contradicting it quickly becomes?
The religions of paganism–along with apostate Christianity and Judaism–inevitably abuse and enslave the spirits, minds, and bodies of their adherents. I personally believe in the story of Adam n Eve and if there is a similar story in Summeria it gives more evidence to its occurence. Myth always contains some elements of truth so the original story was altered as time progressed. Then God decided to restore the true story and communicate it through prophets he chose who could eventually write it down for future generations to read. God is the author of His-tory and he made sure to give mankind a correct record of events important for our future salvation. Cain and Abel along with the garden and other stories told in Genesis probably contain different elements of truth in myths also passed down.
There are two seals found from the ancient era which actually depicts scenes from Genesis which gives more evidence of its truth:

The Adam and Eve seal
Another Sumerian seal, dated ca. 3500 B.C. and now housed in the museum of the University of Pennsylvania, shows events that took place after the man and woman ate the forbidden fruit. This seal depicts the naked figures of a male and a female, bowed in humiliation, being driven out, followed by a serpent. This seal also describes the story of the expulsion from the Garden of Eden: “. . . Therefore the LORD God sent him [Adam] out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken” (Genesis 3:23).
It is difficult to explain what the three figures, engraved on a seal dating from the beginnings of human antiquity, are doing if the artifact is not another depiction of the Genesis account.

Go back to the paragraph you are quoting. Nowhere does it say “when the Hebrew bible was but a distant memory”. You might have, on first reading, seen only what you wanted to see. There is no question that the Egyptians, Babylonians and Sumerians predate the Hebrews. The Doctor neglected, though, to mention Zoroaster, a Persian, whose concepts of monotheism occured slightly before Akhenaten’s. Otherwise, I agree completely with his opinions.

It was a crime for many centuries … The Roman Catholic Church ruled with a iron fist … It took over from the Western Roman Empire and continued to conquer and murder all in its path. As a lover of history i never cease to be horrified by the acts committed in the name of God.

It is very important for people to stop believing in a history that was not true. Continue to believe that bibles were not manipulated by human for particular reasons is still to believe that the earth is flat. We have reach a point to change our view easily if we wish. Otherwise few people like you have to continue writing and writing to open the people eye.

Dr. John Lightfoot stated that the Hebrew writings in Greek or Hebrew was very hard to work with as they did not know how to write well or put forth a clear thought and translating their writings was very difficult and time consuming. Too bad we do not have any of the original manuscripts of the Old or New Testaments.
