The Bible is Wrong About “Original Sin”
There are three ways to prove that the Bible is Wrong About “Original Sin”. First, let’s look at the essence of the story of Adam and Eve.
The Back Story
The Lord God creates the ” Tree of Life” and “The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” and places them in the Garden of Eden. Ex 2:9
The Lord God put Adam in the Garden of Eden Ex 2:5.
The Lord God tells Adam he may not eat of the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” for in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die. Ex 2:17
The Lord God makes Eve out of Adam’s rib. Ex 2:22
The serpent asks Eve if God had said “Ye shall not eat of every tree in the garden“. Ex 3:1
Eve acknowledges that neither she nor Adam should eat of the “tree which is in the midst of the garden“. Ex 3:3
(How in the heck is Eve supposed to be able to identify the forbidden tree if all she has to go on is that it is “in the midst of the garden”?)
Wrong By Evolution
If you acknowledge that evolution is the process by which we came to be, then there was no Adam and Eve and there was no Garden of Eden and there was no eating of the forbidden fruit. Thus, there was no original sin.
Q.E.D.
Don’t Acknowledge Evolution? then…
Wrong By Critical Thinking
OK … thinking about the back story; let’s apply some critical thinking here. You know, that thing that colleges brag about instilling in their graduates.
Fact: Eve has not yet eaten from the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”. Therefore, she has no idea of what is good (God, Adam) and what is evil (serpent).
Fact: A strange looking creature (no breasts, puny nipples, penis, facial hair, bigger and more muscular than she) said something called god said she would surely die if she ate of the fruit of the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”. Eve has no reason to believe this second-hand “hearsay” from this strange looking creature (Adam) because she had not yet eaten from the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”.
Fact: Another strange looking creature (serpent) tells Eve, face to face, that she WILL NOT surely die if she eats of “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”.
Fact: Since Eve has not yet eaten from the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” she has no basis for evaluating anything said by either the serpent or Adam.
Fact: Eve having not yet eaten from the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”, “saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” Ex 3:6
THINK
And why shouldn’t she eat the apple? She wanted to be wise and “the tree was good for food”. What is wrong with that? Adam said “God said, Don’t eat the fruit”; the thing in front of her, the serpent, speaking to her at the moment, said “Do eat the fruit, you will not die”.
Having no ability to distinguish good from evil, Eve did what the last strange creature to talk to her told her. When she ate and saw that the serpent was right, that she did not die, she then had reason to believe that the serpent was the truthsayer and god (whatever ‘god’ is) through Adam, was wrong. From Eve’s perspective, the word or concept “god” had no meaning.
Eve now felt free to give an apple to Adam, knowing that he would not surely die either and that that thing, god, was wrong.
Eve cannot be faulted for selecting fruit from the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” when all she had to go by was that it was “in the midst of the garden“. She could not know that a particular tree of the many in “the midst of the garden” was THE TREE. All she knew, for she had not yet eaten from “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” was that she saw “a tree that was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes”.
Conclusion
There is no way Eve could have known she was doing evil because she had not yet eaten from the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”.
Wrong By Biblical Proof
The flood killed all those who were infested with sin. Only perfect Noah and his family survived. Thus, just as sin was propagated via Adam and Eve’s progeny, freedom from sin was propagated by Noah’s progeny.
Wrong By Fact
Evolution is how we came to be. Thus there was no Adam or Eve.
Wrong Due To Christian MisUnderstanding
In Genesis 3:22 we learn that God is not concerned with Eve’s “sin”; does not care that Eve ate the apple. It turns out, the “Lord” is afraid that man might live forever. That is what upsets God
3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Scream of Incredulity
WAIT! Let’s look at that again. God is afraid that man might get a chance to eat from that OTHER tree (the tree of life) so God sends him out of the garden of Eden! Not because Eve ate from the apple but because GOD IS AFRAID that man would eat and live forever.
Conclusion
The concept of “original sin” is without merit and totally discredited. Eve is absolved from creating original sin. She got a bad rap.
Questions
If there was no original sin, what is Jesus saving us from?
How is it that we inherit the alleged “sin” of Adam and Eve?
Why would the Lord God want to prevent his beloved creations from gaining wisdom? Jesus, later on, asks his followers, Does not the Father know what you want and does he not provide? The answer is NO – He does not provide. In fact he sentences most of humanity to eternal torture because he prohibited the acquisition of wisdom; i.e. failed to provide.
